Dr. Gullickson’s sleep assessments typically involve a detailed interview and completion of a number of questionnaires. You will be asked to keep a sleep log for at least two weeks before the assessment. An interview with a bed partner can also be useful if applicable. Dr. Gullickson may recommend follow-up assessment with a doctor if she thinks that might be helpful based on your presentation. This could include bloodwork, medication review, or an overnight sleep study.

Some sleep disorders are more appropriately diagnosed by a medical doctor (e.g., sleep apnea), but others can be diagnosed by a psychologist, such as chronic insomnia disorder. If Dr. Gullickson is unable to provide a diagnosis, she will direct you toward the professionals who can.
-
There are cognitive, behavioural, and emotional components to most sleep disorders, so a psychologist would be helpful with almost any problem; however, insomnia is the sleep disorder most commonly treated by a psychologist. Sometimes psychologists work collaboratively with medical doctors depending on the specific sleep disorder being treated.
